There have been times in my (long) life in which I have spent extraordinary amounts of time exercising in one form or another. Particularly in my Ironman Triathlon days when I frequently spent hours per day either running, biking or cycling.
Looking back, although I wouldn’t trade those experiences for anything, from a strictly “health” point of view, all that exercise was excessive and counter-productive. Those kinds of endurance activities involving repetitive stress and a lot of pounding to your muscles and joints will eventually catch up to you as a senior.
I am one of the lucky ones. No knee replacements. No hip replacements. Not too many low back problems. Nevertheless, I have battled a painful hip problem for years which I am convinced is a direct result of too much running when I was younger. Luckily, with my research for UpgradedSenior.Com, I have found ways to almost entirely eliminate the hip issue.
Anyway, back to the point. As seniors, we develop a great new appreciation for the value of time. Spending two hours at the gym 3 or 4 times a week, or 4 hours running down the pavement are just too time consuming for the results obtained. In fact, as I have said, they are counter-productive.
On the other hand, we can’t just stop exercising. One of the major factors that leads to the “traditional senior” lifestyle, as opposed to the Upgraded Senior lifestyle is gradually loosing our strength, muscle tone and balance as we age. All bad!
