Back in a “Jiffy”

I hear a lot of seniors use the term, “jiffy.”

  • “I’ll be back in a jiffy”
  • “It’ll only take a jiffy”

You probably didn’t know that the term “jiffy” is actually a scientific term for time measurement.  The odd thing is, the term is defined differently for different fields of science.

Originally, it was the time it took light to travel 1 centimeter (not very long).  Now, in electronics, at least, it’s 1/50 or 1/60 of a second.  It’s much shorter in physics.
